I am pleased to annouce that Joseph Teskey, MA, MFT, a Marriage and Family Therapist from Winnipeg, Canada has joined my practice. Joseph is being supervised by me as he obtains his license from New York State. Joseph is a skilled clinician, with a background and philosophy to mine: Joseph practices Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples. Joseph works with individuals from an attachment perpective -- he is emotionally engaged -- "in it with you" -- and he believes in treating the whole person, not just mental health symptoms, but your body, mind and spirit. Joseph also works as a transformational coach, and has worked with addictions, as a mindfulness teacher, and practices yoga. Joseph's personal statement follows:
In the earliest part of my career, I worked with seriously mentally ill patients, in the Department of Forensic Psychiatry in the Province of Manitoba, Canada. This work taught me an important lesson for all of the clients I have with in my psychotherapy practice: I work hard to learn what is most important to you, and to talk your language. This leads to my second principle for our work: All of the work we do together is seen through the lens of connection. We will find places of resonance together. And third: We will find undreamed of places inside of you, which perhaps you never even knew you had, let alone thought possible of achieving. You will achieve these dreams.
I recieved my M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saybrook University, San Francisco, CA. (Saybrook was founded by scholars in the humanistic psychology movement, and centered on the belief that every person is a work in progress and that each of us has the capacity and the responsibility for our own development.) Besides my work in Forensic Psychiatry, I have worked in the field of alcohol and drug recovery, in the community surrounding Edgewood Rehab in Namaimo, British Columbia, and I am a Co-Founder of "Crossroads Recovery" a halfway house there as a service to that community. I have also trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples with Dr. Sue Johnson of Ottawa, Canada. I have completed a coaching program, and help clients achieve their deepest desires. I also have completed a Mindfulness Teacher Training program, and practice Vipassana meditation and yoga, as well as write poetry.
The couples model in which I practice, EFT, has shown a 90% success rate. See our Couples Counseling page on this website for more information about EFT.
I am most available Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, although other days may also be available. I offer sliding scale fees, based on your income and ability to pay.
